Sarah and Samuel approached me at the beginning of 2014 to photograph their Arundel wedding for the summer of that year. We had a meeting over tea (and probably cake!) at the Garage Lounge in Southsea to discuss what I could offer as a wedding photographer which I then followed up with a full brochure of details in the post. There was a subsequent meeting where we went through any finer details and they booked Sainte Croix Wedding Photography.

Sarah and Samuel were moving away from Portsmouth just before the wedding. Since it is the town they had met and lived in for a few years I suggested it would be a good location for their engagement photography, a great way to save good memories. This session was arranged so they could get used to being in front of the camera and feel relaxed with it. It also gave us all the opportunity to get to know each other a little more, learn any extra wedding day details and have another cuppa.

The big day soon came about. We were lucky with the weather. It had been an intense heatwave but the night before the wedding had been a rain storm clearing the air. The wedding had a traditional start in the historic Arundel registry office, a beautiful building with one of Europe's last “Gasloliers”, a rather elegant Gothic locking chandelier running on gas.

The afternoon was to be a whole new theme to the morning, a perfect contrast to the formality with all the guests staying in luxury teepees and yurts in a huge wild field, perfect for a midsummers wedding and a celebration with family and friends.

I met with Samuel early in the morning in his yurt tent. We had a quick catch up over cover, a few fun photos and then I was off to find Sarah and the bridal party getting ready in their hotel. Through my connections I had helped Sarah find her hair and make-up artist for the day with Katie Johnson (link to Katie Hair and MUA). We had just enough time here and at the registry office for a few photos before the wedding and then the ceremony began.

A few of the preparation photos from both sides before we go on to the ceremony...

The venue for the ceremony was a beautiful big room with the 10am morning sun lighting it up. Sarah’s dad played the piano during the signing of the register and after the ceremony the guests moved to the terrace for drinks before all moving back to the wedding reception venue at Billycan Arundel.

This was an opportunity for Sarah and Samuel to relax together as I took them away for 45 mins for their own private photography. Days prior to the wedding I had already had a recce of the Arundel area and found many beautiful locations. I even arranged with the Arundel Estate manager for the couple to cool off from the midsummer heat on a gentle row across the lake with boats booked and reserved especailly for them!

Sarah and Samuel were soon back at their beautiful reception. The large marque laid out with some great themes. Relying on inspirations from their origins, Sarah from Jersey and Samuel from Yorkshire, meant the guests were treated to delicacies such as Yorkshire Ales and Jersey Crab. Each table was named after a Jersey beach with an authentic looking market crate delivered with freshly prepared regional foods from the regions: delicious and perfect for summer.

The marquee reception was perfect for the hottest part of the day providing a ideal shade from the midday sun allowing the guests to relax and enjoy the food and of course the speeches.

Moving in to the afternoon many of the guests changed into their summer clothes to relax and have a celebratory drink with the newly married couple. We took the opportunity to create some relaxed group photos to keep with the atmosphere that Sarah and Sam had arranged.

Later in the evening for the as the sun was going down I had arranged another short selection of photos with Sarah and Sam in the golden light of the falling sun. It gave them another chance to relax and have some time together before getting back to the marque and in time for the party!

As evening guests arrived large paellas were cooked up in an adjacent gazebo and as the light fell the partying grew, before the first dance had even finished with Sarah and Samuel inviting everyone to join them!

Of course with everyone camping there was one last essential thing to do and that was the campfire. Around midnight everyone circled it with the acoustic guitar revealing some amazing talent from the guests. (Or at least it seemed that way after a whole day of celebrating!).

A brilliant mid summers wedding for Sarah and Samuel and with photos they can look back on to remember it forever. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to capture the day for them and to get to know them. It was fantastic to meet so many nice people at the wedding and make many new friends. At the end of the day I was even invited to camp over which also allowed me to stay late enough to experience and capture every part of their fantastic day. Can we do it all again in 2015 please?!
Thank you!
